Federal Guidelines for Collecting and Reporting Race and Ethnicity

The U. S. Department of Education require that ethnic and racial information for all staff and students be reported in a way to more accurately reflect the nation’s diversity. Previously, reporting race and ethnicity only allowed individuals to be identified in one racial category. The new guidelines allow individuals to select more than one race and/or ethnicity. This change allows individuals to more accurately reflect their racial and ethnic background.

The Tennessee Higher Education Commission requires all Tennessee institutions to begin reporting using the multiple race and ethnicity codes starting with the 2009-2010 school year. Roane State must collect this information on all active staff, and enrolled students. In order to meet this requirement, you will see a short survey pop up when you access your student records information in RaiderNet. It will not take more than a minute of your time, so please complete the survey as soon as possible.

For information about the new reporting guidelines, visit http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2008802.
